\nOne of the great worries about the movement towards Digital Video Recorders has been the question of adskipping. That is: if you download your favorite TV shows to your DVR, and then watch them at a later time, then you’d probably want to fastforward – or entirely skip – the commercial blocks. Which in effect leaves the broadcasters with potentially zero revenue.<\/p>\n
\nAt the same time the Joost-model makes it cheaper to “broadcast” the programs. Why? Because Joost does not have to send the entire TVshow from the Joost-servers to your computer. The Joost-technology builds on peer-to-peer computing: the first few viewers of a TV-program will off course have to fetch the video files from the Joost computers. But when the video is first out there, it’s distributed from these first viewers computer to the computers of other people wanting to watch the same movie. (Provided of course that the computers of the first viewers are still online, that is). This is how the socalled peer-to-peer technology works.<\/p>\n
\n<\/strong>And there’s even more to it: Not only distribution cost, but also development cost of Joost seems to have been minimal: The guys behind Joost are also the guys that develloped Skype (the peer-to-peer telephone application) and before that the guys behind the Kazaaa peer-to-peer music sharing service.
