Ghost comments – help me!

  • Jon Lund

Help me – I’ve got a bug. People post comments to my blog that never show up. That is: it says “comments (1)” at the end of the blogpost – but at the same time there’s no comments to see! Neither in my Word Press Admin interface says anything about a comment being posted.

Anybody knows about a bug like this I’d love to hear from you. I guess email might be the safest right now:-( jl at fdim.dk

  1. It might be your spam blocker. If you go to a post with no comments, fill the fields with test data and answer the math question wrong, the comment count will go to one. Also it seems the spam blocker have problems when using non-IE browsers to post comments. But without access to the source, it is hard to debug.

  2. Hi Anders,

I think this might be it! Thanks! Only question is now: what spamblocker should I use instead (I badly need one – tried removing the present one and had nearly a hundred spamcomments in one day)

  3. Anders, I’ve turned on Aksimet – it allready blocked 9 spam-mails in the past hour or so.

I’m looking into the browser statistics. It should be working, but apparantly haven’t been updated since week 47:-(

  4. Yep, and week 47 is just about a month and a half ago.

If you at the same time could check if Firefox 2.x haven’t been miscategorized as “Mozilla 1.x” it would be great. Your statistics shows a strange uptake in “Mozilla 1.x” around the time Firefox 2 was released. While Firefox 2 is based on Gecko 1.8 and therefore might in some (twisted) sense be referred to as Mozilla 1.x, it is at least misleading.

  5. Anders I’ve passed this one on to TNS Gallup, who are conducting the survey for us. I’ll be back when I have the answer.
