Flow-TV might tie itself to time – and survive

  • Jon Lund

“I didn’t think flow-TV would stand a chance”, one of my fellowtravellers said to me in a cap, last week in LA. He refered to a situation where Personal Video Recorders (PVRs) like Tivo enables the viewer to make himself his own TVchannels populated only with the programs he really care about.

“But now I’m getting second thoughts”, he went on. “If TV-formats finds out how to tie themselves to time, they surely have a chance – like: Newsprograms have this here-and-now feeling about them – sure you can watch a newsprogram on demand, but really, often you’d want the “breaking” sensation of watching them live. TVshows engaging in simulaneous online competitions is another example of TVformats tied to time.”

Wise words, clever analysis, I think! Really: very few things are black and white, when you care to look at them in details.
