New era: traffic- and audience measurement 2.0

  • Jon Lund

In 1999 the Danish standard for measuring traffic and audience on websites moved from logfiles analysis to site-centric auditing. That was a paradigm shift, which dramatically increased the quality of the measurement. Now my organisation, FDIM, is taking measurement to yet another level. Have a look at our press release (in Danish, click here):

IAB Denmark enters into a contract with Gemius S.A on online traffic- and audience measurement.
The IAB Denmark, which operates under the name of Foreningen af Danske InternetMedier (FDIM), has entered into a contract with Gemius S.A on the future online audience- and traffic measurement in Denmark. According to the contract, Gemius will be conducting the measurement of how many and who are visiting Danish websites. FDIM has organised the measurement since the late 1997. The future measurement will increase significantly the knowledge of the usage of the Danish websites.

”With the agreement we’ve secured a much better overview of the traffic on the Danish websites and on the profiles of the users” says Christian Peytz, chairman of FDIM. ”Gemius had the significantly best offer both when it came to the quality of the system and to the price. We’re looking forward to cooperating with Gemius on the future traffic- and audience measurement on the Danish market”.

Gemius is working out of Warzaw, Poland and has a longstanding experience on similar measurements in a number of countries. Gemius was founded in 1999.

“Entering foreign markets is a natural direction of our development. Thanks to a widely appreciated methodology we have managed to achieve a strong position on the Central and Eastern European market. We are happy that it is Denmark that is the first country of Western Europe, which will familiarize with the great potential of Gemius’ research” – says Marcin Pery, Vice-President of Gemius.

Aside from the basic site centric measurement of the number of users etc. of the participating websites, Gemius will monitor the profiles of the users visiting each site by means of a 25.000+ persons-panel.  Due to the size of the panel, it will be possible to conduct analysis of the users on relatively small sites or on sub sites of larger sites. By fusing the site centric and panel-based approaches, the measurement will give unique insights to the internet habits of Danes.

The agreement also makes it possible to offer the measurement to even very small websites on attractive economic terms.

Gemius is chosen for the Danish market after a very thorough tender-process, with participation of the leading online research companies in the world. The incoming offers have been reviewed by a special FDIM-committee, entailing leading Danish internet analysts.

The new traffic- and audience measurement is expected to be finished by summer 2007. As a part of the agreement, Gemius will set up a Danish speaking local office in Copenhagen.
