If you’re a classic freak, you’re in for a treat. In celebration of Mozarts 250 years anniversary Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) makes 9 of Mozart’s symphonies ready for free download.
However you have to wait a few days. DR puts the first symphony online on January 27: Symphoni nr. 15 in G-flat.
The following days this is followed by symphonies nr. 41, 36, 40, 23, 15, 34, 39, 17 and 35.

All symphonies were recorded by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra (english website click here)
If this costs anything, DR is paying for you. However Mozart has been dead long enough not to have any rights to his music – and the musicians and technicians are all employed by DR, so their rights to the recordings might also be relatively cheap.

When BBC podcastet a number of Beethovens symphonies last summer it was a huge success with over 600.000 downloads in one week. (See the BBC download site).
Update: DR now disclosed the terms of use for the free giveaway. In essence what it says is that you can download one copy for yourself but you’re not allowed to copy or distribute it in any way whatsoever. The downloads will be available for one month following the release of each download.
Update2: DR has provided a podcast service for the Mozart downloads. Just enter the sting http://podcast.dr.dk/mozart/rssfeed/mozart.xml into your podcast-program (like iTunes) and wait for the symphonies to download themselfes when put “on air”.
Update 3: It’s over: DR just settled the score and found that the nine symphonies had been downloaded a total of 1.118.207 times during the 6 weeks of free download. Read my post about it.

Does anyone know what lisence the symphony applied to this music? Are they letting people share it with others or is it limited like the BBCs?
