An hour ago the first episode of six in tv-drama-series on public service DR (Danish Broadcasting Corporation) went on air. “Forestillinger” (“Performances“) is directed by Per Fly, one of the most talented Danish directors these days. “This series is my best work ever”, Per Fly is quoted to have said. Expectations are high!
Already last week, however, the episode was made availble on the internet by DR. DR had the series premier on the series’ website, a week before launched to your good old tube.
And five minutes after the broadcast-version of todays episode had ended, episode number 2 was available on dr.dk. All for free.
Once upon a time new films premiered in the cinema, then went to the video-kiosks, and then finally on TV. This is apparently not so anymore! (Though, off course, this is easer for DR than for commercial TV-producing companies. DR after all doesn’t have to think about making money on their productions – only on pleasing as many Danes as possible).

Small comment: TV 2 has done this numerous times in the past:
‘Klovn’ was available on Zulu.dk one day ahead of premiering on TV – for free. Right now ‘Anna Pihl’ is available one week before premiering on TV although you have to pay since it’s on Sputnik. The same goes for ‘Desperate Housewives’.

Especially since TV2 is financed by commercials – that is: TV2 does have other aims than just “pleasing as many Danes as possible”. And so, this makes a stronger case that “web first”-debuts are here to stay, than does the webcasting by DR.
